The Light Bulb Moment!
In 2019, two fly fishing buddies who enjoyed exploring the local pocket-waters, streams, ponds and back-waters of Maine and New Hampshire were looking for a better solution for transporting their delicate fly rods than the rooftop fishing rod carriers currently available
JD and Jay wanted a car-top mounted rod rack that would enable instant retrieval of a fully rigged rod with a hand-tied fly ready to go! The problem was that all the solutions on the market lacked most of the features that were wanted by both. So Jay (with his engineering background) was inspired to re-imagine and make a better “fish trap”– a solution that would protect the delicate bamboo and high-end rods that they cherished – while not breaking the bank. FlyCastFast was born!
Other rod carriers for sale are either open to the elements (like a roof-top ski-rack) or lacked features the boys thought were no-go items. Features like fully waterproof (yet vented) locking enclosures, padding for the rods and reels to eliminate vibration, capacity long enough to accommodate rods up to 10 feet in length and universal mounts for any vehicle crossbar system right out of the box. It was also critical that any solution could simultaneously coexist with a roof carried canoe, kayak or cargo-box and, importantly, it must be reasonably priced and easy to assemble and install. Our vision at FlyCastFast is to enable fishing guides and everyday fly fisherman alike – to be able to find a nice piece of water, jump out of the vehicle, retrieve the rod and be casting for fish in under 5 minutes . . .
Simple and Sweet! We welcome anglers of all skill levels looking for an easy way to increase fishing time and have your line in the water faster for your favorite Trout, Bass, Crappie or even Musky. When you don’t have to take the time to rig a rod, you can hit every little pocket as you drive the back-roads looking for the best spot. Brookies up to predatory Pike equally sizzle in the pan! At FlyCastFast, we are proud to manufacture our fly rod roof racks right here in New England – USA . We are “American Made”!
According to Trout Unlimited, Maine is home to 97 percent of the wild brook trout waters in the Eastern United States. According to Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, almost 10 percent of Maine’s 6,000 lakes and ponds – 555 in total – feature wild and native brook trout.
I have often wondered: "Where did fly fishing really begin?" Dame Stoddard was one of the first in England to write down the theory of fishing the fly. But not so fast! In fact, the first recorded mention of fly fishing comes much earlier – in AD 200 actually. It was the noted Roman author and teacher of rhetoric Claudius Aelianus who wrote that the "Macedonians cast with rods for speckled fish using crimson red wool round a hook and two feathers which grow under a cock’s wattles." This must prove it is Human Nature to fish with the fly – or does it?
